The Hoop Snake moves at a staggering speed, avoiding trees as well as cars and other objects that might be in its way. It is a harrier that chases its victim down through hills and down and up steps, across the backyard, and then over the cat. Nothing can stop the snake from following a young child, their favorite prey. As a kid, I constantly was looking around to be safe from the famous snake. I didn't see the snake or ever pursued by it. My generation was much more sophisticated than the previous generation. Every adult who spoke of this snake had either been a victim or had a family member who was scourged. It is sad when children realize that Hoop Snakes don't exist. Children wouldn't have the chance to see the animal in the absence of hearing it from their parents.
It's hard to tell the number of children who were slapped by the people who created this wagging tail for being tardy for dinner or not getting there on time. It was a confusing period for a lot of children in my old neighborhood. Today, I am aware that there has never been or will ever be an Hoop Snake. I'm devastated by this due to all the time I spent as a child. Imagine the strength it could have if it were actually alive. Its ability to turn its back defies the physical laws. It can also move around and in between trees, while its eyes are directed either upwards or downwards and never noticing what is within its path. As I was walking around taking in every turn I was able to give a little of laughter to a few adults. This tale is not true. I am no Hoop Snake.
Then we come to the dreaded Milk Snake who was responsible for children developing Brittle Bone Disease. As a youngster I was taught to drink my entire milk since there was an increase in Milk Snakes because of the rains that were heavy. It was likely to be an influx of milk soon. The Milk Snake was not in any way related to the real Milk Snake that is part of the King Snake Family (Lampropeltistriangulum). This snake was fat and black and would sneak into barns beneath an eerie cover. It moved swiftly and carefully, which meant that it didn't have a chance. It would grab onto cows' utters and never give a thought to the kids with teeth that were likely to fall out and then develop brittle bones, and it forced the poor cow to drink dry. There was a legend that said farmers would visit the barn at daybreak to scatter dust on the cows as they tried to milk them.
Certain farmers had a bounty on the snake and would pay big bucks for every milk snake that was brought to them. Although it was not something I had thought of I can only imagine how big a milk snake would have been to consume up to 4 gallons milk per sitting. They can be seen at a distance of 25 feet and are as big as the size of a football. Although a snake of this size would have been very difficult to find however, it's not impossible to catch. The milk serpent is not real. It's never been one and isn't likely to be. Snakes are lactose intolerant. The force of a snake to drink two-ounces might cause its demise. Fooled again!
