Hoop Snake, rolling at incredible speeds and keeping clear of cars and trees and trees, chases its prey up and down hills, down hills, and through the stairs through the yard and over the cat. As a kid, I looked around every corner to make sure that I was safe from this snake. But, I did not have the opportunity to meet another kid who was either caught or was a victim as a result. My generation probably was quicker than earlier generations as almost every adult who was able to talk about the snake was either one of the victims or knew someone who was hit by one. It's tragic to watch kids growing older and realizing that there aren't any Hoop Snakes. Adults shared their stories with so much fear and detail that it was hard for a child to imagine the creature.
There is no telling the number of kids who received a slap from the makers of this tail due to being late for supper or for not arriving on time because they walked slowly and were looking around at every place in the distance that a Hoop Snake could be waiting to the waiting area, they were walking home. It was a stressful time for many children in my old neighborhood. It is now clear that there was never and will never be there ever be an Hoop Snake and I am devastated most likely due to the years spent in my early childhood. What is the strength that this animal could possess if it was real? Its ability to turn on its back defies the laws of physics. It is also able to swerve in and around trees while its eyes are directed either upwards or downwards and never noticing what is on the other side of the way. Well I guess I provided some adults with a little laugh as I walked away looking around every corner I came across. This story has been discredited.
Next we have the dreaded Milk Snake who was responsible for the children who developed brittle bone disease. As a kid I was advised to drink my entire milk because there has been an increase in the number of Milk Snakes due to the heavy rains and there was sure to be a milk shortage fairly soon. The Milk Snake was not related to the real milk snake, a member of the King Snake family, (Lampropeltis triangulum) and was not even remotely. The snake was huge and all-black and would slip into barns, hiding under a cover of darkness. A cow would not be in a position to stop it from moving at a slow pace and intentionally. It would grab cows' utters and never care about the children's teeth that were soon to fall out. The snake then took the cow dry. It was reported that farmers would visit the barn during the day to scatter dust on the cows while they tried to milk them.
The reward was paid out by farmers who would shell out a large amount of money for every milk snake brought to their farm. I have never thought of it, but can you imagine how large a milk snake must have grown to consume as much as four gallons in a single sitting? The snake is approximately twenty-five feet long and the size of a football. A snake this large would be easy to spot, but unlike the vampire that was able to consume six tons of blood from just one human it was magical because nobody ever took the first dollar of all of the rewards offered to this milk thief, not one. Unfortunately, the milk snake legend is now a myth. Snakes are lactose intolerant, so forcing a snake into drinking two ounces of milk can be fatal. Don't fall for the myths!
