Hoop Snake is a speedy reptile that moves at high speeds, dodging cars and trees. When it's on trail of its prey, the Hoop Snake will chase its victim through the yard, over the cat and up the steps. As a youngster I sat at every corner to insure my safety against this well known snake and I guess I did a great job in avoiding it. I never did get to encounter one, or even meet a child who encountered one or was chased by one. I would guess my generation was faster then those of the past since nearly every adult who spoke of the creature was either a victim or had a relative who was victimized by a Hoop Snake. It's tragic to watch youngsters growing older and recognizing that there aren't Hoop Snakes. Adults told their stories with such fear and detail that it was hard for a child to envision the creature.
There's no way to tell the number of kids who received a slap from the makers of this tail for being late for dinner or not getting home on time because they walked slowly taking in every location in the distance, where there was a Hoop Snake might lay in wait for them, while they were walking home. It was a bit confusing for a lot of the children in my neighborhood. Now , I can see that there was never will ever be an Hoop Snake. This is a sad fact because of my experiences as a child. Do you think of the power this animal would have if it were actually real? Turning over on its back defies the laws. The animal's ability to navigate between trees and other obstacles is a feat of strength. It's possible that I am providing a few adults with a laugh while I walked off, looking around every corner I came across. This tale is busted, never was ever a Hoop Snake, and never will ever be.
Then there is the fearsome Milk Snake who was responsible for children developing Brittle Bone Disease. As a child I was told to drink every drop of milk. Due to the increased quantity of Milk Snakes that occur during severe rains, there would likely be the possibility of a shortage of milk in the near future. The Milk Snake was not related to a real milk snake (Lampropeltistriangulum), but it was a member in the King Snake family. This snake was long and big, black, and moved into barns underneath the cover of darkness moving along slowly and deliberately, a cow never stood an opportunity. It would grab onto the cow's words, and never give a thought about children. Their teeth were bound to come out, and the snake then would take the blood of the cow. It was said that farmers would come to the barn in the morning to scatter dust on the cows while they tried to milk them.
The bounty was paid by farmers who would shell out a large amount of money for every milk snake they brought into their farms. While I wasn't thinking about it, can you think of how large the milk snake must be to consume three to four five gallons of milk in one sitting? It's up to 25 feet and is as tall like a football. It would have been difficult to find a snake this large, but it was magical, just like the vampire that could consume six liters of water from one human. No one ever received the first cent of the reward offered to this milk thief. Unfortunately, the milk snake legend is now an untruth. Snakes are actually lactose intolerant and forcing the snake to drink 2 ounces of snake could very likely cause its death. Don't fall for the myths.
