It's hard to know how many kids were spanked by the creators of this tail for being tardy for dinner, not keeping their schedules or for walking slowly, and looking out at any spot where the Hoop Snake could lurk while they walked home. It was quite confusing for many of the kids from my neighborhood. Now, I know there's never been and will ever be an Hoop Snake. I am saddened by this because of all the times I was an infant. Can you imagine the strength the animal could possess if it were actually real? The ability of this animal to turn on its back defies the laws of physics. It also can turn around and through trees, while its eyes are focused either downward or upward and never noticing what is in its path. So I must have provided some adults with a laugh while I walked through the streets, looking at every corner I came across. This tale is a bust and there's never been an Hoop Snake, and there will never be another.
Then we come to the dreaded Milk Snake who was responsible for children developing brittle bone disease. I was taught as a kid to drink all my milk, because there was a rise in Milk Snakes resulting from the heavy rains. It was likely that there would be a shortage very soon. This Milk Snake was not in any way related to the real Milk Snake and is a member of King Snake Family (Lampropeltistriangulum). The snake was long and fat, all black and was able to slip into barns beneath the darkness of the night, going slowly and carefully the cows never had an opportunity. It would cling to the cows' utters and never give an thought to the children who's teeth would fall out , and later develop brittle bones, and it forced the poor cow to drink dry. It was reported that farmers would come to the barn at daybreak to leave dust behind the cows as they tried to milk them.
There were farmers who were able to offer a reward for this snake , and would offer big bucks for every milk snake that was delivered to them. While I wasn't thinking about it, can you imagine how large the milk snake had to be to consume three or four gallon of milk in a single sitting? The snake is around twenty-five feet in length and is the size of the size of a football. Although a snake of this size might have been very difficult to find however, it's not impossible to catch. It's sad to say that the milk snake is a myth it never was and ever will be. Snakes are lactose intolerant, and forcing the snake to drink 2 inches of snake water could well cause its demise. Don't be fooled!
