The originators of this tail do not know how many kids were given spankings for not arriving on time for dinner or not being late for school or. The reason was that they were slow walking and stared at every spot that was in the distance, where there was a Hoop Snake could be waiting for them. It was quite confusing for many of the kids from my former neighborhood. Now I see that there has never been or ever will ever be a Hoop Snake. It's tragic because of the years I lost as a child. Imagine the strength it could be if the animal were actually alive. Its ability to turn on its side defies all physical laws. It is also able to swerve in and around trees with its eyes directed either upwards or downwards and never noticing what is within the way. As I was walking around taking in every turn I was able to give a little of laughter to a few adults. The story isn't true. I'm not a Hoop Snake.
The next one is the unwelcomed Milk Snake. It was the reason for children to develop Brittlebone Disease. I was taught in my childhood to drink my entire milk, because there was a rise in Milk Snakes resulting from the torrential rains. It was probable that there will be a shortage soon. This Milk Snake wasn't at all related to the actual Milk Snake (Lampropeltis Triangulum) which is a member of the King Snake family. This snake was fat and black, and would sneak into barns beneath a dark cover. It moved slowly and in a deliberate manner, meaning that it didn't have an opportunity. It would grab onto cows utter and never giving a thought to the kids with teeth that were likely to fall out , and later acquire brittle bones, it forced the poor cow to drink dry. It was said that farmers would stop by the barn in the evening to dust the cows and let it utter while they milked it.
The bounty was paid out by farmers who would shell out a large amount of money for each milk snake brought into their farms. This was something I'd previously not considered, however it is amazing to think how large the milk serpent must have been to drink up to 4 gallons at a time. The snake could grow up to 25 feet in length and be as large as the size of a football. Surely a snake that large would be easy to find but like the vampire that was able to drink six tons of blood from just one human it was magical because no one ever got the first penny of the money offered to the milk thief. Not one. The mythical milk snake is no more. Snakes don't like lactose and making a snake drink 2 pounds of water can result in its death. Don't fall for the myths.
