I never did get to see one, or meet another kid who either encountered one or was pursued by one. My generation is likely to be faster than the previous generation because the majority of people who talked about this creature were either victims or relatives of those who were stomped on by the Hoop Snake. It is sad when kids grow up and realize they don't have Hoop Snakes. They played a large part in most children's lives. It was a sad discovery for children to discover that Hoop Snakes were not real.
It's difficult to determine how many kids were spanked by the creators of this tail because they were late for supper, for not following the schedule or for simply slow walking, and gazing out for any place where the Hoop Snake could lurk while they walked back home. It was a bit confusing for a lot of the children in my old neighborhood. I now realize that there was never a Hoop Snake in my neighborhood, and this is mostly due to the time I spent away from my early years. Can you just imagine the strength it would possess had it been a real animal? The ability to turn over onto its back defies the laws of physics as do its ability to spin between trees and other objects with its eyes looking either down or up and not seeing what is on the ground. As I left I scanned every corner. This tale is not true. I am no Hoop Snake.
Then comes the unwelcome Milk Snake. It was at the root of children developing Brittlebone Disease. As a youngster I was taught to drink my entire milk because there was an rise in the number of Milk Snakes because of the torrential rains. There would be an influx of milk soon. The Milk Snake wasn't connected to the real Milk Snake (Lampropeltistriangulum), in any way. The fat, long snake was all black and moved slowly and in deliberate manners, making it impossible for cows to avoid. It would cling to the cows' utters and never give a thought to the kids whose teeth were sure to be ripped out and acquire brittle bones, it sucked that poor cow dry. It was reported that farmers would come to the barn during the day to leave dust behind the cows while they tried to milk them.
This snake was a prized possession of farmers and they would pay huge amounts for each one at their notice. I've never thought of it, but can you imagine how big a milk snake would have become to eat up to four gallons in a single sitting? The snake can grow to 25 feet in length and can be as big as a football. It would have been difficult to find a snake this big and powerful, but it was truly magical, just like the vampire who could drink six liters from one human. No one ever received the first dollar of all the reward offered to this milk thieves. The milk snake legend is now an untruth.
