Hoop Snake is a fast reptile that rolls at great speeds, dodging trees and cars. When it's on trail of their prey, the Hoop Snake can chase its prey through the yard, over the cat and up the steps. As a youngster I sat at every turn to ensure my safety against this well recognized snake. I was successful of staying clear of it, since I did not encounter one, or even meet someone else who encountered one or was pursued by one. I'd say my generation was more advanced than those of the past, as just about every adult who spoke of this creature was a former victim or had a friend who was victimized by a Hoop Snake. It's sad to see children become adults and realize there aren't any Hoop Snakes. They were a huge aspect of their lives. Adults shared their stories with so much fear and detail that it was hard for children to imagine the creature.
It's hard to know how many children received spankings from the people who created this tail for being late for supper, for not being on schedule, or simply for slow walking, and gazing out for any place where a Hoop Snake could be lurking, while they walked to home. It was a really confusing moment for a lot of kids in my former neighborhood, and I can tell that in all sincerity. It is now clear that there never was and will never be a Hoop Snake. This is in part due to my early years. Imagine how much strength it would have if this animal was alive. Its ability to turn on its back is a defiance to all laws of physics. It also can move around and in between trees, while its eyes are focused either downward or upward and never noticing what is on the other side of its way. They seemed a little amused watching them glance around at every corner that I went to. The story is a sham, never was an Hoop Snake, and never will be.
Then, we come to the fearsome Milk Snake. He was responsible for kids developing brittle bones disease. I was taught as a kid to drink my entire milk because there was an increase in Milk Snakes due to the heavy rains. It was expected that there will be a shortage soon. The Milk Snake was not related to the actual milk snake, a member of the King Snake family, (Lampropeltis triangulum) but not in any way. This snake was long and large, and all black. It moved into barns underneath the cover of darkness slow and deliberate the cows never had an opportunity. It would cling to the cows' utters and never give any thought to the children with teeth that were likely to be ripped out and acquire brittle bones, it sucked that poor cow dry. It was our understanding that the barn would be visited by farmers at breaks during the day, and they left dust behind as the cows spoke as they milked them.
A bounty was set up by some farmers for every milk snake that they brought into. While I wasn't thinking about it, can you imagine how large the milk snake had to be to have consumed three or four five gallons of milk in a single session? It can reach twenty-five foot and is the same height like a football. It would have been difficult to locate a snake of this size, but it was magical, just like vampires who could drink six liters of blood from one human victim. No one ever received the first dollar of all the bounty's offered to this milk theft thief. It's sad to say that the milk serpent is a myth. It's never been ever been and will never be again. Snakes are lactose intolerant, and forcing the snake to drink 2 inches of snake water could well cause its demise. Beware!
