Hoop Snake is a swift reptile that can move at incredible speeds, skipping over trees and vehicles. When it's on path of their prey the Hoop Snake will chase its victim through the yard, past the cat and up the steps. As a kid, I looked around every corner to make sure that I was safe from this snake. But, I did not have the opportunity to meet another child who was caught or was a victim because of it. My generation was more advanced than previous generations. The majority of adults who was a fan of the snake was either an innocent victim or had a loved one who was shot. It is sad for kids to find out that Hoop Snakes are now extinct. Adults would tell their tales with such fear and details that it was difficult for a child to imagine this animal.
There's no way to tell how many kids got a slap from the makers of this tail for being late for dinner or not getting home on time because they walked slowly and were looking around at every place in the distance, where there was a Hoop Snake might lay in wait for them, while returning to their home. It was a tense moment for children from my neighborhood. I have come to realize that there wasn't an Hoop Snake in my neighborhood, and this is due to the absence of time in my youth. What is the strength that this creature could have if it was real? Being able to flip up onto its back is a defiance to the laws of physics as does its ability to swerve between trees and other things with its eyes looking at either up or down and never seeing what Lay in its path. I'm pretty sure I provided a lot of laughter for some adults as they watched me look around at every corner I walked by. This story is a flop and there's ever been a Hoop Snake and there isn't going to be another.
We then have the feared Milk Snake. He was responsible for children developing Brittle bones disease. As a kid, I was told to drink all my milk as there had been an increase in Milk Snakes as a result of the rainy season and there would be a milk shortage fairly shortly. This Milk Snake was not at all related to the real Milk Snake (Lampropeltis Triangulum) which is a member of the King Snake family. The snake was huge and all-black and would slip into barns under a blanket of darkness. A cow would not be able to stop it from moving at a slow pace and purposefully. It would latch onto the cows' utters and never give an thought to the children who's teeth would be ripped out and develop brittle bones, and it sucked that poor cow dry. It was reported that farmers would come to the barn during the day to scatter dust on the cows when they attempted to milk them.
Farmers were rewarded with a bounty and would pay big money for any milk snake brought to them. I never really considered it, but can you imagine how huge the milk snake must be to consume three to four gallons of milk in a single sitting? They can be seen at twenty-five ft and are the size of a football. It's obvious that a snake this large could have been simple to locate. But, as with the vampire that was able to drink six liters blood from a single person, it was magic. Nobody ever got the first dollar of any reward offered to this milk thieves. Sad to say that the milk snake is not real, never was one, never will be. Snakes are lactose intolerant, and forcing the snake to drink 2 ounces of snake could very well cause its demise. Beware!
