The Hoop Snake moves at an incredible speed, keeping clear of trees as well as cars and other obstacles in its way. It chases its victim down, through hills and down and up steps, through the backyard, and then over the cat. It is impossible to stop the snake from following children, their favorite prey. As a kid, I constantly was looking around to be safe from this well-known snake. I didn't see the snake or ever chased by it. I'd say my generation was a step ahead of the previous generations since nearly everyone who talked about the snake was a previous victim or had a relative who was victimized by a Hoop Snake. It is sad when children are aware that Hoop Snakes do not exist. Adults shared their stories with such worry and details that it was difficult for a child to imagine the animal.
It's hard to tell the exact number of children who were punished by the people who created this wagging tail for being late for dinner or not being on-time. It was a very confusing time for a lot of children in my old neighborhood, I can tell you that with all sincerity. It is now clear that there never was nor will there ever be an Hoop Snake and I am saddened by this most likely due to the years spent in my early childhood. Imagine the strength it would have if it were alive. Turning over on its back over the top of its head is an outright violation of law. The ability of the animal to maneuver between trees and other obstacles is an impressive feat of strength. So I must have provided a few adults with a little smile as I walked through the streets, looking at every corner I came to. The story is a sham, never was an Hoop Snake, and never will ever be.
Then comes the unwelcomed Milk Snake. It was at the root of children developing brittlebone disease. When I was a kid, I was advised to drink my whole milk due to an rise in the number of Milk Snakes brought on by heavy rains. This meant that there will soon be a shortage. The Milk Snake wasn't associated with the actual Milk Snake (Lampropeltistriangulum), in any way. The snake was large and black and was able to sneak into barns, hiding under a dark cloak. The snake moved swiftly and in a deliberate manner, meaning that the cow wouldn't stand any chance. It would cling to the cow's utters, not considering the kids with teeth that were likely to fall out. Then it would wash the cow's water. Based on our research farmers used to visit the barn during breaks in the day to gather dust and milk cows.
The bounty was paid out by farmers who would shell out a large amount of money per milk snake that was brought to their farm. I've never thought about it , but do you think about how big the milk snake must be to have consumed three to four gallons milk in one moment? It was about twenty-five feet and as big around as a football. It is obvious that a snake this large would be easy for someone to find. But, like the vampire who could drink up to six liters of blood from one individual it was a feat of amazing. No one ever received the first cent of any reward offered to this milk thief. Sad to say, the milk serpent is a myth. It's never been ever been a reality and it will never be again. Snakes are lactose-intolerant, so forcing a snake into drinking two ounces of milk can be fatal. Beware!
