Hoop Snake speeds at lightning speed, darting cars, trees and other objects along its path, and chases its victim upand into hills. As a child I sat at every corner to ensure my safety against this well known snake . I think I did a great job of staying clear of it, since I did not encounter one, or even meet a child who encountered one or was pursued by one. I'd say my generation was more advanced than those of the past since nearly every adult who spoke of the snake was a previous victim or had a friend who was victimized by a Hoop Snake. It's sad to see youngsters growing older and recognizing that there are no Hoop Snakes. Adults would tell their tales with such fear and detail that it was hard for children to imagine the creature.
It's impossible to tell how many children received spankings by the designers of the tail due to being tardy for dinner, not being on schedule or for walking slowly, and looking out for any place where a Hoop Snake might lurk, as they made their way to home. It was quite confusing for many of my children from my old neighborhood. Now, I know there's never been nor will ever be an Hoop Snake. I'm saddened by this because of all the time I spent as a child. Can you just imagine the strength that it could possess were this creature real? Its ability to turn on its back defies the physical laws. It is also able to move around and in between trees, while its eyes are fixed either downwards or upwards but never looking at what lies in the way. I think I did provide plenty of laughs for some adults as they observed me looking around at every turn I went by. This story has been debunked.
The next one is the unwelcomed Milk Snake. It was at the root of children developing Brittlebone Disease. As a youngster I was advised to drink the entire milk. Due to the increase in the number of Milk Snakes in heavy rainfalls, there would likely be the possibility of a shortage of milk in the near future. The Milk Snake wasn't related to a real milk snake (Lampropeltistriangulum), but it was a member in the King Snake family. The snake was completely long, black and fat. It was slow and careful and the cows were never in danger. It would grab onto cows' utter and not give a thought to the kids with teeth that were likely to be ripped out and develop brittle bones, and it sucked that poor cow dry. We were told that farmers would come to the barn after a time breaks to discover dust leaving the cows mouths as they tried to milk it.
The reward was paid by farmers who would offer a significant amount of money per milk snake that was brought into their farms. I've never considered it, but do you think about how big the milk snake must be to have consumed three to four gallons milk at a single time? The snake is around 25 feet long and nearly as big as a football. A snake of this size was difficult to find, but just like the vampire who could take six liters of blood from a single victim it was a feat of magic. Because no one ever got the first penny out of all of the rewards for the milk thief. It's sad to say that the milk serpent is a myth. It's never ever been and will not be one again. Snakes are actually lactose intolerant, and forcing a snake to drink two ounces of snake could very well cause its demise. Don't be fooled again!
