It is safe to say that every child who has ventured out into the open at any time has been warned to watch out for these fascinating creatures. Beware of falling victim to the mi-roding reptile, known as "Hoop Snake". The extra-long and muscular snake can create the perfect 360-degree circle around its body while it is on the ground. It then places its tail in its mouth, forming the living Hula Hoop. And then, like magic, it flips on its side and begins the hunt!

Hoop Snake is a fast reptile that can move at incredible speeds, dodging cars and trees. When it's on the trail of its prey, the Hoop Snake is known to chase its prey through the yard, over the cat and up the steps. As a child I sat at every turn to ensure my safety against this widely known snake and I guess I was successful in avoiding it. I did not encounter one, or even meet a child who saw one or was chased by one. I would guess my generation was a step ahead of those of the past, as just about every adult who spoke of the snake was a previous victim or had a family member who was scourged by the Hoop Snake. It's sad for kids to discover that Hoop Snakes are extinct. Children will never get the opportunity to meet the animal in the absence of hearing it from their parents.

The originators of this tail aren't aware of how many children were given spankings for being late for dinner or for not being on time. The reason was that they walked slowly and looked at every spot that was in the distance, in which there was a Hoop Snake could be waiting. It was a confusing period for a lot of children in my old neighborhood. It is now clear that there has never been nor will there ever be any Hoop Snake and I am saddened by this most likely due to the years lost during my child hood. Imagine the strength it could have if it were alive. Flipping up on its side over the top of its head is an outright violation of law. The animal's ability to maneuver between trees and obstacles is an impressive feat of strength. I think I did provide plenty of laughs for a few adults as they watched me look around at every corner I walked by. This tale is busted, never was an Hoop Snake, and never will ever be.

Then comes the scary Milk Snake, who caused brittlebone disease in children. As a youngster I was advised to drink all my milk as there had been an increase of Milk Snakes due to the heavy rains and there would be a milk shortage fairly shortly. The Milk Snake was not at all related to the actual Milk Snake (Lampropeltis Triangulum) which is a member of the King Snake family. The long, fat snake was black and moved slowly and in deliberate manners, making it impossible for cows to resist. It would cling to the cows' utter and not give any thought to the children who's teeth would fall out and then develop brittle bones, and it took the cow's blood dry. We knew that the barn would be visited by farmers during the day break, who would leave behind dust as the cows uttered while they milked them.

A bounty was set up by some farmers for every milk snake they brought into. I never really thought about it but can you imagine how huge the milk snake must be to have consumed three to four gallons milk in one time? They can be seen at 25 feet and can be as large as a football. Although a snake of this size might have been very difficult to find, it is not impossible to capture. The milk snake myth is now an untruth. Snakes are lactose intolerant and forcing the animals to drink two ounces could lead to their demise. Beware of the myths!

What happened to the brand new species of snake known as the "Venomous Bull Snake"? This terrifying creature is the result of two distinct snake species who stumbled upon each other a couple of years ago. Male snake was an Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake that came upon a Southern Pine snake. They glanced at each other and they could see stars both. Cupid started shooting arrows all over the place and they both fell head over heels for one another. They had a lot of young women, as did all married couples. They were not typical young people. They were snakes who had half the mother's defencive arsenal and half that of the father's. All things considered, the Bull Snake, as it was known was among the most unpleasant animals to encounter within the forest.
