Today, I am aware that there never was nor will ever be an Hoop Snake and I am devastated mostly because of the time spent in my early childhood. Imagine the strength it would have if this animal was actually alive. Turning over on its back is a feat that defies all laws. The ability of the animal to maneuver between trees and obstacles is a feat of strength. I'm sure I brought a lot of laughter for some adults who watched me look around at every turn I went by. This tale is not true. I'm not a Hoop Snake.
Then there is the fearsome Milk Snake who was responsible for kids acquiring the bone disease known as brittle. I was taught in my childhood to drink all my milk, because there was a rise in Milk Snakes due to the torrential rains. It was probable that there will be a shortage soon. This Milk Snake wasn't related to the real milk snake, which is a part of the King Snake family, (Lampropeltis triangulum) and was not even remotely. The snake was long and fat, all black and slipped into barns under the darkness of the night, moving along slowly and deliberately and never giving a cow an opportunity. It would grab onto cows utterings, and never think about children. Their teeth were certain to be sucked out, and it then took the cow's blood. There was a legend that said farmers would visit the barn during the day to dust the cows when they attempted to milk them.
Farmers had a bounty and would be willing to pay a huge sum for milk snakes that were brought to them. I've never considered it but can you picture how large a milk snake must have grown to consume up to four gallons at once? It could reach up to twenty-five feet and can be nearly as tall as a football. It's evident that a snake this large could have been simple to locate. But, like the vampire that was able to drink up to six liters of blood from one person it was pure magical. It was never the first cent of any reward offered to this milk thief. It's sad to say that the milk serpent is a legend. It's never been one and will not be one again. Snakes are lactose intolerant, so forcing them to drink 2 ounces of water could cause their death. Don't fall for the myths.
