Hoop Snake is a speedy reptile that moves at high speeds, dodging trees and cars. When it's on trail of its prey, the Hoop Snake can chase its victim through the yard, over the cat and up the steps. As a child, I looked around at every corner to ensure safety against this famous snake. It was unfortunate that I didn't get to see one myself or meet a child who was chased by one. My generation was much faster than the other generations. The majority of adults who have heard of this snake were either victims or had relatives savaged by one. It's a shame that kids become adults and realize there aren't any Hoop Snakes. It was a major part of most kids' lives. The adults told their stories with such an intense dread in their voice , and they detailed the creature in such detail, that a child would never have had the chance to experience it.
It's hard to know how many kids were spanked from the people who created this tail for being late for supper, for not keeping their schedules or for simply taking a long walk, or looking out for any place where there was a Hoop Snake might lurk, when they headed back home. It was confusing for many kids in my neighborhood. I can assure you. As of now, I'm aware that there has never been or will ever be a Hoop Snake. I'm saddened by this because of all my experiences as an infant. Imagine how much strength it would have if it were actually alive. Being able to pivot on its back is a defiance to the laws of physics as do its ability to spin through trees and other objects while its eyes are looking at either up or down and not seeing what is in its path. When I was out walking looking at every corner and nook, I gave a smidge of a laugh to a couple of adults. This tale has been dismissed.
Next up is the frightening Milk Snake, who caused the brittlebone disorder in children. As a youngster, I was instructed to drink my entire milk since there was an increase in the number of Milk Snakes as a result of the rains that were heavy. There was the shortage of milk soon. This Milk Snake wasn't related to the real milk snake, which is a part of the King Snake family, (Lampropeltis triangulum), not at all. The snake was huge and all-black and would slip into barns underneath a cloak of darkness. A cow would not be capable of stopping it from moving at a slow pace and purposefully. It would cling to the cows' utters and never give any thought to the children whose teeth were sure to fall out , and later develop brittle bones, and it took the cow's blood dry. We were informed that farmers would go to the barn after a the end of the day to find dust on the cows' mouths as they tried to milk it.
A bounty was established by some farmers for each milk snake that they brought in. Though I never thought about it, can you imagine the size of the milk snake had to be to have consumed three or four five gallons of milk in a single session? The snake is around twenty-five feet long and the size of a football. A snake of this size was difficult to find, but like the vampire who was able to take six liters of blood from a single victim it was a feat of magic. Since nobody ever got the first penny out of all of the money that was offered to the milk thief. The legend of the milk snake is gone. Snakes are lactose intolerant and forcing them to drink two ounces could result in their death. Fooled again!
