Paul Theroux On The Plain Of Snakes
Paul Theroux On The Plain Of Snakes. It is not a fun romp through the beach towns, famed archeological sites, colonial cobbled streets that are hallmarks of travel writing. An excerpt from on the plain of snakes:

Hoop Snake is a fast reptile that can move at incredible speeds, skipping over trees and vehicles. If it's on the trail of their prey, the Hoop Snake can chase its prey through the yard, over the cat and then climb up the steps. As a child I always looked around to ensure my safety from the well-known snake. I didn't see the snake or ever chased by it. I'd guess that my generation was more advanced than those of the past, as just about every adult who spoke of the snake was a previous victim or had a family member who was scourged by the Hoop Snake. It's sad that children become adults and realize they don't have Hoop Snakes. They were a huge aspect of their lives. Adults would tell their tales with so much fear and detail that it was hard for a child to envision the animal.
It's impossible to tell how many kids were spanked from the people who created this tail because they were late for dinner, for not being on schedule or for walking slowly, and looking out at any spot where the Hoop Snake might lurk, while they walked home. It was a very confusing moment for a lot of kids in my former neighborhood, I can tell you this with complete honesty. Now, I know there's never been nor will ever be a Hoop Snake. I am saddened by this because of all the times I was an infant. Do you think about how powerful it could be if this creature was real? Turning over on its back defies the laws. The ability of the animal to navigate between trees and things is a feat of strength. They were a bit amused as I watched them glance around at every corner I passed by. This story is finished. There has never been a Hoop snake and it will never be.
The next one is the unwelcomed Milk Snake. It was the reason for children to develop Brittlebone Disease. I was taught in my childhood to drink all my milk as there was an increase in Milk Snakes resulting from the rainy season. It was probable that there will be a shortage soon. This Milk Snake was not related to the actual milk snake, one of the members of the King Snake family, (Lampropeltis triangulum) and was not even remotely. This snake was long and fat, all black and moved into barns underneath the darkness of the night, moving along slowly and deliberately and never giving a cow any chance. It would cling to the cows utter and never giving an thought to the children who's teeth would fall out , and later acquire brittle bones, it forced the poor cow to drink dry. We were told that farmers would go to the barn at night to clean the cows, and let it utter while they milked it.
This snake was a prized farm animal and farmers paid huge sums for each snake that was brought to their attention. It was something I had previously not considered, however it is amazing to think how large the milk serpent would have had to be to drink three to four gallons at once. The snake can grow to twenty-five feet long and can be as big as the size of a football. It's evident that a snake that big would be easy to locate. But, like the vampire who was able consume six liters of blood from a single person it was pure magical. It was never the first dollar of the bounty that was offered to the milk thieves. It is sad to report that the myth about the milk snake is now discredited. Snakes aren't tolerant of lactose, so forcing a snake drink two ounces of snake water could cause its death. I was fooled once again!
What has happened to the new kind of snake, dubbed the "Venomous Bull Snake"? The terrifying creature is the result of two different snake species who came across each other just a few years ago. Male was an Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake and he was able to see the female a Southern Pine Snake. Stars were seen by both the snakes and cupid began shooting arrows everywhere. They had a lot of young women as did all married couples. These were not just ordinary young people however, they were snakes with the majority of the father's defensive weapons, as well as the half of the mothers. When all was done and dusted, the Bull snake was considered to be one of the worst animals to find in the woods.
