The much-feared Milk Snake is next. It is the cause of children developing bone brittle disease. As a youngster I was advised to drink all my milk since there was an increase in Milk Snakes due to the heavy rains and there would be a shortage of milk fairly shortly. The large, fat snake was all black and was moving in deliberate and slow manners, making it hard for cows to resist. It would cling to the cows' utters, never thinking of the kids with teeth that were likely to fall out. Then it would flush the cow's water. We were informed that farmers would return to the barn at day break to find dust on the cows' utter as they attempted to milk it.
Farmers were rewarded with a bounty and would offer huge sums of money for any milk snake that was brought to them. It was something I'd never considered, but it is amazing to think how big the milk snake would have had to be to drink three to four gallons in one go. The snake is around 25 feet long and nearly as big as the size of a football. A snake this large would be easy to locate, but just like the vampire who was able to drink six liters of blood from one human victim, it was magic because no one ever collected the first penny of the rewards offered to the milk thief. Not one. Sad to say, the milk serpent is not real. It has never been one and isn't likely to be. Snakes don't like lactose and forcing a snake to drink two ounces of snake water could cause its death. Don't fall for it!
